Two things that are often confused
- An old photograph is not automatically in the public domain. Copyright depends on when and where it was made and on who made it, not on how old it looks.
- Owning the physical photograph does not necessarily mean owning the copyright in it.
What we ask you to record
For every image or document you add, keep what you know: source, photographer or creator, approximate date, copyright status, permission, original owner or archive, and a citation. The photo upload itself takes only the image today; until the photo library collects these fields, put them in the person's notes or in the source you cite. An image with its provenance is evidence; an image without it is a picture.
